My first experience teaching reading skills was to a group of young Cambodian women who were eager to learn English. I was right out of college volunteering in an organization in Cambodia, and teaching ESL was something that I fell into as I realized what a valuable skill English would be for the women I was working with. It was incredibly rewarding to see these young women work out the foreign sounds and pronunciation of English words, and to begin to construct words and sentences. I loved how they lit up when things clicked and they were able to read a new word or sentence. It planted in my heart a love for teaching, and a belief that literacy is a tool for empowerment and joy.
I ended up teaching ESL for many more years in Cambodia to students of all ages and fluency levels. I continued to find teaching meaningful and fun as I saw my students grow in their English skills and in thier confidence to use their English in the real world.
Now having returned to the States, I am excited to tutor students locally who are facing challenges with reading, and to help them develop adaptive skills that will allow them to excel as readers.
